Important Announcement for USPS Customers:
Mercury Contaminated Packages

Notice from USPS:

Dear Valued USPS Customer:

We were recently notified by the United States Postal Service (USPS) that on or about Sunday, March 24, 2019, a mercury spill occurred at the USPS Pittsburgh Network & Distribution Center (NDC). The USPS has determined that packages referenced here were “contaminated in the incident, cannot be safely delivered or returned, and must be destroyed by a company specifically certified to dispose of hazardous material.”

Here’s what you/your customers will need to know:

  • Package details: Refer to the attached list for impacted shipments.
  • Insurance claim: Shippers can file an insurance claim if they purchased insurance or if the package was shipped via Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express. To file an insurance claim go to: https://www.usps.com/help/claims.htm.
  • Postage refund: Shippers are entitled to a refund for postage and fees for services that were not rendered. Pitney Bowes will request refunds for affected shipments on shippers’ behalf. The refund will be credited to the shippers’ postage account upon USPS approval.
